Why I'm Running

We see the damage a lack of government accountability, transparency and oversight has caused at the national level. On the local and county level, good government is even more critical. County government affects the things we encounter every day - roads, parks, open spaces, our drinking water and decisions about how our tax dollars are spent, among others.

Our representatives are responsible for actively establishing and maintaining a relationship with those they serve. Your representatives should listen to you. Speak up for you. Keep you informed on the issues you care about.

And with your help, that's what I'll do. Vote on July 7th for JENNIFER LARSEN for ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDER in DISTRICT 4*.

Jennifer Larsen is a mom, Columbia graduate, communications specialist, and a 15-year resident of Essex County. She's owned a small eco-friendly business, served as a board member, and held leadership positions with volunteer organizations. Jennifer is a passionate environmental and democratic activist and ally of our community.

*District 4 is: Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Livingston, Millburn, North Caldwell, Roseland, Verona, West Caldwell and West Orange.

Government Accountability & Transparency

The COVID crisis has shown us that now, more than ever, it's critical that we hold our government representatives to the highest standard of transparency and accountability. Has your Freeholder kept you informed? If not, why not?

Communication and public discourse is essential to democracy. Yet, often at public meetings, questions are not answered and debate is not open. Public questions deserve public answers.

Taxes and Revenue

Depending on the town you live in, the percentage of your tax dollar that goes to Essex County ranges from 10-23%. That adds up to the $769.9M Essex County annual budget. We need to ensure that Essex County spends our tax money in ways that best benefit our residents.

ICE / Essex County Detention Facility

Essex County is paid $40M by the federal government every year to house ICE detainees at the Essex County Detention Center in Newark. Federal immigrant detention practices Freeholders make the decision as to whether or not Essex County continues that contract, as well as oversight of the conditions in the center, for both ICE detainees and inmates. And during a pandemic, conditions are not safe for anyone there. Conditions prohibit socially distancing, and other safety practices.

Turtle Back Zoo Expansion / South Mountain Reservation

Residents in surrounding towns have publicly opposed the expansion. Environmentally and financially, it is a mistake. Once you take away open space, it is gone forever. We have to preserve our open spaces. And especially In the time of a pandemic, with economic uncertainty for our state and our county on the horizon, building a $4M, 500-seat amphitheater is not in the best interest of our citizens.
